With more than 220 million flat tires annually, it’s important to know what to do in the event it happens to you. While you can’t predict when something will puncture your tire, you can be prepared. As a driver, you should always have a spare tire, lug wrench, and jack located in the vehicle. It also helps to have a piece of reflective clothing on hand and additional lights or flares to warn other drivers of your plight. Change your tire safety using these tips from our Avenel, NJ Toyota service team at Sansone Toyota.

Contrary to popular belief, changing a tire isn’t the end of the world. Keep the necessary supplies in your car and follow these simple steps to change a flat.

How to Change a Tire

  1. Secure your vehicle using your car’s hazard lights, along with flares or any additional types of warnings for oncoming drivers
  2. Place tire wedges under your tires to keep the vehicle stable
  3. Pull out your spare tire, lug wrench, and jack
  4. Loosen the lug nuts on the flat tire with the wrench
  5. Use your jack to raise the car
  6. Unscrew the lug nuts and place them in a safe spot
  7. Remove the flat tire
  8. Install the spare tire and replace the lug nuts
  9. Lower your car and tighten the bolts
  10. Put your supplies and the flat tire back into your vehicle
