Toyota Service Tips: Types of Fluids in Your Car

To keep your vehicle running efficiently, it’s important to regularly schedule Toyota service, which includes refilling and replacing your vehicle’s many fluids. We’re outlining the different fluids in your vehicle to help you better understand your service needs at Sansone Toyota.

Engine Oil 

Your engine oil’s primary purpose is to lubricate your engine, which helps reduce heat and friction. Engine oil does lose its efficiency over time, so it will need to be changed routinely. We recommend that you check your owner’s manual to see the appropriate Toyota oil change schedule for your vehicle.

Transmission Fluid 

Similar to engine oil, transmission fluid lubricates and cools your transmission parts. As a general rule of thumb, transmission fluid needs to be replaced every 30,000 to 60,000 miles. However, that range can increase to up to 100,000 miles if you have an automatic transmission.

Power Steering Fluid 

Without power steering, you won’t be able to smoothly steer your vehicle. So, you’ll undoubtedly notice when your power steering fluid is low because your vehicle needs it to keep your system working efficiently. Generally, it’s recommended to flush your power steering fluid every 40,000 to 80,000 miles.

Brake Fluid 

If your brake fluid becomes too old or compromised, your system will start to absorb the excess moisture that your fluid normally does. This can lead to excess heat and compromise your brakes’ efficiency. For your safety, it’s important to replace your brake fluid regularly, typically every two to three years.

Coolant 

Generally, we recommend that you flush your vehicle’s coolant every three years/30,000 miles. Coolant helps absorb the excess heat from your engine, which is necessary to keep your engine at an ideal temperature.

Windshield Wiper Fluid 

For your safety, you want to make sure that you can always adequately clear your windshield at any time. We recommend that you routinely check your windshield wiper fluid level to ensure it’s at an ideal level.
