Electric Car Maintenance

EV Maintenance

The popularity of electric vehicles continues to grow year after year, and with that growth comes an increase in the need for EV maintenance at our service center. Since electric vehicles lack many of the same parts that you’ll find in cars with a gas engine, you’ll typically need to schedule maintenance appointments less frequently. To learn more, visit us at Sansone Toyota today.

How Does EV Maintenance Differ?

One of the biggest differences when it comes to electric vehicles and cars with gas engines is the battery. The battery inside an EV not only powers all of your lighting and various interfaces, but it also completely controls how your vehicle drives.

The battery pack will lose charge and range over time, but you’ll thankfully only need to replace it once every ten years or so. Most electric Toyota models also come with a limited warranty that protects you if the battery breaks down too quickly.

Another difference comes with the introduction of regenerative braking. This innovative feature comes into focus when you stop accelerating, allowing your electric motors to reverse their rotation and regain a small amount of charge. This feature not only increases your car’s electric range, but it means you’ll visit us for brake maintenance much less often.

What Stays the Same?

Even though electric vehicles and gas-powered vehicles vary drastically, there are some Toyota parts that stay mostly the same. One maintenance task you’ll still need to complete is the coolant change, but the coolant used in your battery pack needs to be changed out much less frequently.

Since your powertrain consists of electric motors, you’ll also be able to avoid many powertrain maintenance tasks, such as oil changes. The transmission used inside an EV is also much simpler, meaning you won’t have to worry about regular transmission service like you would with a gas model.
